T-Mobile's $100M IntentCX Conversational AI investment with OpenAI
The Information, one of my favourite technology focused news sites, is reporting that T-Mobile has agreed a deal with OpenAI thus:
T-Mobile agreed to pay OpenAI roughly $100 million over the next three years as part of a deal to use the startup’s technology, The Information reported on Monday. T-Mobile is paying to use OpenAI’s models to develop a new customer service chatbot that will aim to remember customer-specific data and use generative artificial intelligence to answer the bulk of their questions without the need for a human agent. T-Mobile said it plans to release the tool next year.

This news from The Information builds on the rather detailed press release back in September from T-Mobile announcing their partnership with OpenAI. That one didn't include numbers though!
If you're a Conversational AI vendor, you might consider to closely evaluate the press release, because it appears that T-Mobile are a) building something for themselves and b) taking a leaf out of Amazon's playbook and aiming to make that available for other businesses in other industries.
Here's the key paragraph from their press release and I've bolded the key phrase:
With secure access to T-Mobile data and its ability to comprehend customer intent and sentiment in real time, IntentCX will have the ability to apply meaningful understanding and knowledge of the customer to every interaction, offer solutions to resolve issues and even take proactive actions on their behalf. The initial goal is to apply the most advanced technology and business processes, to maximize the success of every customer’s journey with T-Mobile, and in the process, create a blueprint applicable across industries.
Here's an obligatory press release comment from OpenAI's Sam Altman:
“T-Mobile deeply understands how to delight customers, and is driven to deliver better, more personalized solutions,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. “We’re thrilled to partner with them to build faster, more intuitive, and accessible experiences for millions of people.”
Absolutely fascinating. Watch this one!
