I've long been following (and used) Cleo ever since the company launched back in 2017 on Facebook Messenger as the 'Siri of personal finance'.

The company has gone through quite a few iterations most recently with a significant pivot to focus exclusively on the United States marketplace.

When I saw they were hiring, I thought this was relevant for two reasons:

  1. I do like to document interesting Conversational AI roles that I see
  2. It's an opportunity to make sure we're all aware of Cleo as a really, really good Conversational AI-based financial advice service

When I'm documenting roles, I do err on the side of senior. There are dozens of Conversational AI-related roles on the job sites at the moment – however not that many are interesting.

So, to the role.

First, I think we should be congratulating the Cleo team for actually putting salary ranges on their job listings. Most still don't do this. They've even published their salary bandings.

The Lead Product Analyst for AI Chat attracts a salary in the range of £90-£113k.

Here's the summary description:

As a Lead Product Analyst in our Chat pillar you'll be at the centre of strategic decision-making within your team. Working as part of a cross-functional squad alongside Product Managers, Designers, and Engineers, you'll apply your expertise to drive the future of what we build at Cleo. You will leverage rich user data and sophisticated analytical techniques to see your insights move key metrics and improve the quality of Cleo's conversational experience. You're also likely to be the most senior analyst in your pillar (typically 3-5 analysts in each pillar) meaning additional responsibilities in working with pillar leads and company leadership in shaping strategy across squads in your domain.

It's perhaps no surprise that the team is comprised of 50+ ML and AI team members.

You can apply here.

How does Cleo work?

Well, it's essentially a financial advice assistant that helps you with all manner of budgeting habits described nicely by the menu option at the bottom of the app: Accounts, Budget, Chat (with Cleo), Save and Borrow.

Cleo talks to you a lot. I used to really enjoy getting active outreach from Cleo about my accounts, balances, transactions, spending habits and so on.

As you might imagine, this is a rather popular service. This Times article from about a year ago reported Cleo has 7 million users.

And some of them are paying. Here's what The Times reported:

While a basic service is free, Cleo sells one subscription service in America at $5.99 a month which has 450,000 active monthly users, and another at $14.99 a month which has 150,000.

That's $2.7M a month in basic subscription revenue and $2.3M per month in premium subscription revenues. So roughly $5M a month or $60M per year.

If you're in the States, check out Cleo.
